Recruitment

Membership in Kappa Alpha Gamma begins with one night. There are no secrets about what is tested; the standard is published before you arrive.

How it works

  1. 1

    Interest form

Submit the form. We confirm eligibility and send the information session date. Candidates must be 18 or older and currently enrolled in college.

  2. 2

    Information session

A classroom evening covers the standard, the route, safety procedures, and required equipment. Waivers and medical screening are completed here.

  3. 3

    Selection

One overnight land navigation assessment. Candidates move on foot between checkpoints with map and compass. Safety staff are positioned throughout the course and monitor by radio.

  4. 4

    Decision

Results are reviewed against the published standard. Every candidate receives a decision and written feedback within one week.

  5. 5

    New member class

Selected candidates join the new member class and begin the four-discipline syllabus the following week.

The night of Selection

Candidates move on foot between checkpoints with a map, a compass, and a radio for reporting in. Selection assesses composure, decision making, and teamwork; the skills are taught afterward. No prior experience is required.

Published standards. No exceptions.

Selection is demanding by design. It is also transparent, voluntary, and supervised. These commitments apply to every event the chapter runs.

  • Voluntary participation

No one is pressured to attend. Every candidate chooses to be there.

  • Withdraw at any time

A candidate may stop at any point, for any reason, without penalty or question.

  • Medical staff on site

Trained medical personnel are present for the full duration of every assessment.

  • Published standards

The assessment criteria are shared in writing before the event. Nothing is hidden.

  • Zero tolerance for hazing

Hazing of any kind ends membership. This policy has no exceptions and no appeals.

  • Institutional compliance

Where the chapter operates on a campus, it follows that institution's student organization policies.

Questions

Answered before the information session.

Who can join?

College students who are 18 or older and currently enrolled. No prior experience is required. Selection assesses composure, decision making, and teamwork; the skills are taught afterward.

What is Selection, exactly?

One overnight land navigation assessment. Candidates move on foot between checkpoints with a map and compass against a standard that is published before you arrive. Safety staff are positioned on the course and monitor by radio for the full duration.

What do I need to bring?

The information session covers the required equipment list. Bring what is on the list and nothing else; the standard does not reward extra kit.

Is there hazing?

No. Hazing of any kind ends membership, with no exceptions and no appeals. Participation is voluntary, and any candidate may withdraw at any point without penalty or question.

What does the firearms safety block involve?

Classroom-first, always-supervised instruction on the four safety rules, safe handling, clearing, storage, and range commands. It is a safety discipline, not a shooting club.

Is Kappa Alpha Gamma affiliated with the military or a university?

No. Kappa Alpha Gamma is an independent student organization and is not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Defense or any military unit. Where the chapter operates on a campus, it follows that institution's student organization policies.

What does it cost, and how much time does it take?

Dues and the training schedule are covered at the information session. After Selection, the four-discipline syllabus begins the following week, and every block ends in a graded evaluation.

When will I hear back?

Every candidate receives a decision and written feedback within one week of Selection.

The next Selection date is set once the information session fills.
